Single-Lane Timber Bridge

The Project

Highway-Rated Timber, Built for Private Land

The property in Hendersonville sits on the western slope of the Blue Ridge — the kind of terrain where a creek crossing isn't a convenience, it's the only way in. The landowner needed a bridge that could carry not just family vehicles but the occasional delivery truck, contractor equipment, and emergency access without question. The answer was an HS-20 load rating: the same standard applied to public highway bridges.

Mark assessed the creek crossing in the early planning stages. The site presented the characteristic challenges of mountain stream construction — variable bedrock depth, steep approach grades on both banks, and a waterway that runs fast and high after heavy rain. Abutment placement had to account for the creek's natural scour patterns to avoid undermining the footings over time.

"People underestimate what it takes to build a private bridge right. HS-20 isn't about overkill — it's about never having to wonder whether the bridge will hold when it matters."

The bridge uses Southern Yellow Pine glulam beams for the primary span — the same structural timber used in commercial and municipal bridge applications throughout the region. The single-lane deck width is practical for the property's driveway geometry, with timber guardrails set to vehicle-impact standards on both sides.

Built in 2003 and still in daily use, the bridge has carried over two decades of mountain winters, spring floods, and heavy equipment without structural intervention. It remains one of the clearest examples in our portfolio of what proper engineering on a private bridge looks like.
